TFT: Best Comps for Ranking Up in Set 17

Comps that'll take you far in Set 17.

This set in TFT is all about fast comps. Or at least it is to a certain point. In the lower ranks, it’s often enough just to have a good comp at all, even if it isn’t the overall best one. So if you want to maximize your LP gains early on in your ranked climb, the best thing to do is pick one comp to one-trick or learn a few to switch between. Especially if you’re a newer player to TFT in general, I’d highly recommend learning a few specific comps to get started. In this article, I’ll talk about 3 comps which are great for making it from Iron all the way to around Platinum or so.

Note: While any of these comps can be good at higher ranks as well, I’d say that one-tricking or even just only playing a few comps isn’t really viable at that point. There, it’s more about flexibility and knowing how to play in any situation.

Viktor Conduit/Voyager

Strategy: Re-Roll at Level 7 (Staying Above 50 Gold)

Recommended Items:

  • Viktor (Jeweled Gauntlet + Rabadon’s Deathcap + Drone Uplink [Psionic Item] or Any AP Items)
  • Illaoi (Any Tank Items)
  • Rhaast (Extra Tank Items)

This comp is all about Viktor and the strength of Rhaast’s Redeemer trait. Viktor has one of the best magic abilities in this set, especially for 3-costs or less. He’s also strong because of the Psionic trait, which grants one of a few special items (randomly selected) that he can use. Then there’s the Redeemer trait which Rhaast activates by himself. It grants your team attack speed and magic resist + armor based on how many non-unique traits your team has active, which is perfect for this comp since it has a ton of traits active but none at high tiers.

The best strategy for this comp is to save as much gold early on to get to level 7 ASAP. Then, as soon as you get to level 7, starting rolling any excess gold each turn to try and 3-star the 3-cost champions (Viktor, Illaoi, and Rhaast). That’s why it’s best to put your items on those three as well. You can also try to 3-star any other Champions, but the 3-costs will be the easiest to get.

Late game, this comp is pretty easy to play as well. Once you go to level 8, I’d recommend swapping out Zoe for Nami or a strong 5-cost. Zoe is good since she works well with the other Conduits, but she isn’t necessary late. This comp also benefits from not needing any specific augments, so you’re very open there. Any that give your team precision (which lets their abilities crit) are strong if you get them before making precision items, and so are any that give you extra team slots.

Teemo/Nami Space Groove

Strategy: Save Gold for a Fast Level 8 then Re-Roll (Staying Above 50 Gold)

Recommended Items:

  • Teemo (Guinsoo’s Rageblade + Giant Slayer + Rabadon’s Deathcap)
  • Samira (Infinity Edge + Any Other Attack Damage Items)
  • Nami (Jeweled Gauntlet + Any Extra Magic Items)
  • Ornn (Tank Items)

I’ve included this comp because, in my opinion, Space Groove is one of the easiest comps to force. Early on you can just play all of them that you get, plus Leona since she matches well with many of them early on. Since this is a level 8 comp, you’ll want to focus on saving as much gold as possible. I’d recommend getting to level 8 somewhere around halfway through stage 4 if you want to be fairly fast. At lower ranks it won’t matter a ton, but as you climb you’ll want to get more consistent with it.

The main damage dealer for this comp is Teemo early on, plus Samira if you get good attack damage items. Then, unlike the Teemo Vanguard comp that’s currently popular, you’ll be able to switch to Nami later on once you get her to 2-star. Nami is strong with Jeweled Gauntlet and then whatever other magic items you can make with what you have. Spear of Shojin is really good, and so is Rabadon’s Deathcap. Ornn is the primary tank for this comp, as his ability to upgrade one of his items to Radiant once he’s holding 3 is incredible. Then, if you can manage a 2-star Blitzcrank, you can start to try and put items on him and use him to his fullest.

There aren’t any “required” augments for this comp, but I’d personally go for damage-based ones first. If you can get one that gives your team precision it would be good, but other than that just go for whatever gets you the most value.

Veigar Meeple

Strategy: Re-Roll at Level 5 (Staying Above 50 Gold)

Recommended Items:

  • Veigar (Jeweled Gauntlet + 2 Nashor’s Tooths Teeth?)
  • Illaoi (Any Tank Items)

This comp is my favorite one right now, and it’s not just because I love Veigar so much in general (although that does factor into it). Honestly, it’s just really easy to play. Meeple is a strong trait in general since most of its strongest Champions are lower cost, so they’re easy to get started with early in the game. The best strategy here is to save as much gold as possible until you hit 50, then immediately start rolling all excess gold to 3-star 1-cost Champions. The earlier you accomplish this the better, but you’ll want to be at 50 gold by around the end of Stage 2 or early Stage 3.

Once you’re happy with how many 3-star Champions you have (if nothing else, at the very least get Veigar there), then it’s good to get to level 7 ASAP. At that point I’d also recommend adding Rhaast to your comp, as he’s good for holding extra tank items and gives lots of buffs since this comp has a lot of traits active. Veigar is strong enough to carry you well into late game if you get him to 3-star, which shouldn’t be a problem most games. If you’re contested by more than one person, though, it’s best to just play something else since the 3-stars are so important.

For this comp, I really like the Pandora’s Box augment which lets you randomize your items each turn. Getting ideal items on Veigar is very important, and it’s helpful in general throughout the whole game. It’s easily one of the best augments, especially for this kind of comp.
